What makes a ‘good’ exam invigilator?
A common question from educators seeking exam invigilation roles is: “What does good performance look like from an exam invigilator?” Many assume it’s just sitting while students take exams—but this is far from reality.
Invigilators play a crucial role in ensuring a safe, fair, and JCQ-compliant exam environment. Schools have high expectations, as these exams shape students’ futures.
Key qualities of a successful exam invigilator:
Proactivity – Actively support the exam process (e.g., setting up, reading/scribing, handling issues professionally). Simply sitting idly is unacceptable.
Reliability – Commit to assigned shifts, arrive early, and avoid cancellations—frequent lateness often results in cancellations of ongoing shifts.
Professionalism – Dress smartly (no denim/trainers), communicate professionally, and NEVER use your phone during exams.
Organisation – Be prepared for shifts at different schools and times (you need to commit to both full-day and half-day shifts, based on the school’s needs).
Training – Complete our FREE, mandatory JCQ-certified training to ensure best practices in invigilation.
